Jeffrey Buis was the winner of the first race of the Supersport 300 World Championship in Assen – securing his first win of the season and doing so at his home round.
The Dutch rider from Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing was the fastest in free practice yesterday, before Julio Garcia (Prodina Kawasaki) claimed pole position, beating David Salvador (Team ProDina XCI/Kawasaki) by 0.364s. Buis qualified in third. This morning, he was the fastest in the warm-up.
In the race this Saturday, Buis made a strong start to take the lead, but by the third lap, he lost a few positions. While seven riders stood out in the early laps, this group was reduced to six in the final laps. Six riders also led at some point during the race.
In an exciting battle that went down to the wire, Buis managed to secure the victory, beating Hugo Maier (Yamaha AD78 FIMLA by MS Racing) by just 0.093s in a near «photo finish».
The third spot on the podium went to García, 0.191s behind the winner and 0.164s ahead of Salvador. Beñat Fernández (Team#109 Retro Traffic Kove) crossed the line in fourth, but a track limits infringement on the last lap led to a penalty, dropping him to fifth.
