The round at Donington Park in the World Supersport Championship started with Yari Montella setting the fastest time in this morning’s free practice session, becoming the first in the history of the category to lap the British track in 1m28s.
During much of the session, Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team/Ducati) topped the standings. He was only briefly displaced from first position for about a minute when Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph) took over.
The Italian quickly returned to the top of the leaderboard, posting a sequence of two fast laps to set the new WSSP record at Donington Park: 1m28.907s. Jorge Navarro (Orelac Racing VerdNatura/Ducati) also surpassed Booth-Amos, finishing second, 0.756s behind. The British rider ended up in third.
Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha), more than a second behind, and Valentin Debise (Evan Bros. Yamaha) rounded out the top five. Adrián Huertas (Aruba.it Ducati), the championship leader, finished only ninth, 1.611s behind Montella.
