Right after the 2024 stock MT-09 was revealed on October 31, Yamaha has now unveiled a more sporty SP version.
Just one week after the last naked reveal, the SP is based on a completely new and credible set that has received a new fairing and a new style incorporating LED lights – along with a more sporty riding position, improved brakes, a completely new TFT instrument panel, and controls.
The heart of the new MT-09 remains the characteristic “CP3” three-cylinder engine updated in 2021, as well as the cast aluminum Deltabox frame introduced in the same year.
The new motorcycle, the SP of 2024, is based on the new MT-09 and adds an improved fully adjustable suspension, top-of-the-range Brembo Stylema brake calipers, an extra customizable Track driving mode, a paint scheme inspired by the R1M superbike in black, blue, and silver (complete with polished aluminum swingarm), and (for the first time on any Yamaha) a new “Smart Key” keyless ignition system.
Although the base of the SP is identical to the standard MT-09 (since most of it is new for 2024), it’s worth remembering.
The most obvious is the “new slimmer and sharper look,” which includes a new fuel tank, a new set of LED front lights in a redesigned cover, a new LED taillight with separate tail and brake lights, as well as a new two-seater seat with matching fairing.
The riding position has also been updated, with a lower handlebar and higher and further back footrests, although both are adjustable. And, just like with the standard 09, there is a brand new five-inch TFT instrument panel and switches, derived from the latest Tracer 9 GT+ (and Niken GT). After that, however, the new SP takes on a life of its own.
As with previous SP models, the 2024 bike comes with fully adjustable premium suspension, this time with a golden DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) finish, KYB 41mm front forks, and an Öhlins rear monoshock.
The new forks offer full adjustment for preload, extension, and compression, while the Öhlins rear unit offers adjustments for compression and extension, as well as a remote preload adjuster.
The brakes on the new MT-09SP have also been improved and now, for the first time, use Brembo monobloc “Stylema” dual calipers, bringing superbike-class braking performance to Yamaha’s 900 roadster.
While the standard 2024 MT-09 includes three riding modes, Sport, Street, and Rain, the new SP has an additional Track mode that allows the rider to customize four extra patterns of power, traction, braking, and others to adapt to specific track scenarios. There is also an exclusive Track theme on the SP’s TFT screen.
A new and so far exclusive feature of the new MT-09 SP is Yamaha’s new keyless “Smart Key” system. This system includes a new “on-off” switch, instead of the usual key slot, on top of the fuel tank, which is active as long as the new Smart Key is within reach. The new switch also includes an option to lock and unlock the fuel tank cap.
The new Yamaha MT-09 SP 2024 is presented only in black/silver/blue, inspired by the R1M, with a polished aluminum swingarm. Prices and availability have not yet been announced.
