Moto2 Practice 2 at the Japanese GP took place on a wet track, and Arón Canet was the strongest under these conditions. Despite the track improving towards the end, no rider was faster than in yesterday’s Practice 1.
The evolution of conditions was noticeable, with lap times improving by almost 14 seconds from the beginning to the end. Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo/Kalex) led the initial 15 minutes. The Turkish rider briefly lost the position but regained it, only to lose it again shortly after to Diogo Moreira.
The Italtrans Racing Team rookie put together a series of three fast laps, allowing him to stay on top for five minutes, until Albert Arenas (QJMotor Gresini/Kalex) took over. The Spaniard also set a series of fast laps, but in the end, Canet (Fantic Racing/Kalex) reached the top with his last lap, beating Arenas by 0.270s.
Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro) finished third, followed by Moreira, and the championship leader Ai Ogura (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro) in fifth.
The combined standings were based on yesterday’s dry Practice 1, where Filip Salac (Elf Marc VDS/Kalex) was the fastest with the lap record of Motegi. In 14th place, Arenas secured the last direct spot into the second qualifying, a goal that Zonta van der Goorbergh (RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP/Kalex) missed by just 0.091s, finishing 15th. García will be another rider heading to Q1.
