Team Roster Decision
The Nationals decided to return right-handed pitcher Evan Reifert to the Rays, reducing their 40-man roster to 39 players. This move was made in accordance with Rule 5 requirements, which mandate that a selected player must remain on the active roster for the season or be returned.
Challenges on the Mound
Reifert’s spring training performance has been marked by significant struggles. In just 6.1 innings pitched, he recorded an ERA of 15.63 and a WHIP of 3.000, while issuing 12 walks. These numbers highlighted issues with command and control, prompting management to act quickly.
Managerial Perspective
The Nationals’ manager emphasized the importance of consistency and command on the mound. While recognizing Reifert’s potential and talent, he stressed that a pitcher who walks multiple batters in an inning creates difficult situations in relief. The emphasis was on the necessity of throwing strikes to avoid leaving runners on base.
Previous Success and Potential
Reifert’s earlier performance in Tampa Bay’s Double-A affiliate at Montgomery showcased his ability to dominate. Over the course of 35 relief appearances, he maintained a 1.96 ERA, recorded 65 strikeouts in 41.1 innings, and kept his WHIP under 1. However, his success at the Double-A level has not yet translated to spring training performance at the major league level.
Next Steps in Development
Having not yet pitched at the Triple-A level, Reifert is expected to begin the season there with the Rays. This upcoming assignment will provide him with an opportunity to refine his command and prove that he can effectively transition his talent to the higher levels of professional baseball.
