Maverick Viñales was close to setting a new MotoGP lap record at the Losail Circuit. During the second practice session of the Qatar GP, the Aprilia rider clocked in at 1m52.652s.
This time would have been a new record, but the Spanish rider had passed through a yellow flag zone moments earlier due to Jack Miller’s (Red Bull KTM) crash.
As the rules stipulate that laps completed under yellow flags should be canceled if the rider passes through the incident area, Viñales saw his record lap canceled ultimately aiding Raúl Fernández (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team/Aprilia) in becoming the fastest in the session.
