In April 2024, Liberty Media announced plans to acquire Dorna, the promoter of MotoGP. Nearly a year later, authorities have yet to approve the deal… and it won’t happen anytime soon.
The matter is now in the hands of the European Union’s competition authorities. However, according to SPEEDWEEK.com, the deadline for a decision has been pushed back again – this time by 20 working days, to June 16.
The European Commission is conducting a Phase 2 investigation, which began at the end of last year. This updated deadline remains provisional, as further delays could still occur.
The purpose of these procedures is to determine whether, by acquiring MotoGP (in addition to F1), Liberty Media might be violating fair competition rules—specifically regarding the trading of broadcasting rights for motorsport.
