BMW has taken a significant step towards the launch of a new model by registering the name R20, signaling its intention to bring to market a motorcycle inspired by the stunning R20 Concept, unveiled last May. According to the specialized website Cycle World, the registration process began the same week the concept version was revealed, although the rights were only officially formalized later.
Currently, the German manufacturer is following the same procedures in other countries, which reinforces the seriousness of the project. The R20 Concept impressed with its design and performance characteristics. The prototype was equipped with a 2000cc Big Boxer engine, integrated into a tubular steel main frame. It also included 17-inch wheels, adjustable suspension both front and rear, supplied by the renowned Öhlins, and an innovative aluminum swingarm. However, not all elements of the concept version are expected to carry over to the final production model.
To comply with European legislation, adaptations are likely to be made, such as the inclusion of a more conventional rear fender. Also, the distinctive parallel swingarm may be adjusted or replaced by a more practical and homologated configuration for road use. Although the final details are still unknown, the registration of the R20 trademark and the heritage of the concept model indicate that BMW intends to launch a motorcycle with a combination of technological innovation and bold styling
If the production version maintains the essence of the concept, it could become a landmark in the high-performance cruiser segment. Now the expectation is to see how BMW will materialize this vision and whether the R20 will live up to the expectations created by its conceptual predecessor.
