The first qualifying session of the MotoGP Catalan GP in Barcelona ended with unexpected results. Fabio Di Giannantonio led with a new lap record, while Raúl Fernández also secured advancement to Q2. In contrast, Marc Márquez, among others, was eliminated.
After the initial attempts, Raúl Fernández (Trackhouse Racing/Aprilia) and Marc Márquez (Gresini/Ducati) held the qualifying positions, with Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) closely behind in third.
The standings remained largely unchanged after the second set of flying laps for the top three, but Álex Márquez (Gresini/Ducati) moved up to fourth.
With just over two minutes remaining, Fernández surprised everyone with a new lap record, while Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse Racing/Aprilia) moved into second place. Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46/Ducati) reached third. Marc Márquez then improved to regain second.
In the final moments, Di Giannantonio overtook Fernández with another lap record, and both advanced to Q2. This left Marc Márquez in third, but his situation worsened as Álex Márquez overtook him just before the end, relegating Marc Márquez to fourth in Q1 and 14th on the starting grid.
