The world of motorcycles is dominated by powerful and technologically advanced machines, but some say that true fun lies in lighter and more agile bikes. Dual-sport and supermoto models are perfect examples of this. Offering a raw and exciting riding experience, these motorcycles bring a contagious energy that wins over both novice and experienced riders. The recent presentation of the RTS X Supermoto concept by Indian brand TVS at the Bharat Mobility Expo brought new elements to this segment – and with a possible German touch from BMW.
The Fascination of Supermotos
Anyone who has ridden a supermoto knows exactly what pure adrenaline means. Tight corners, wheelies, and controlled slides make these motorcycles icons of two-wheeled fun. On circuits, supermotos stand out for the precise dance of riders between control and chaos – an electrifying spectacle to watch and a promise of fun for those who want to experience the same on the streets.
Recently, the supermoto market has been witnessing a renewal with innovative models from established and new brands. An example of this was the launch of the KTM 390 SMC-R, quickly followed by the TVS RTS X Supermoto concept, which stirred enthusiasts’ expectations.
TVS and BMW: A Heavyweight Partnership
Although the TVS name might sound less familiar outside India, the company is a strategic partner of BMW Motorrad, responsible for producing the G 310 line. This collaboration has already yielded notable results, such as the BMW G 310 RR, mirrored in the TVS Apache RR 310, and the BMW G 310 R, which finds its equivalent in the TVS Apache RTR 310. This relationship raises an interesting question: Is BMW preparing to enter the supermoto segment with a new G 310 X based on the TVS concept?
The connection makes sense. TVS has already proven capable of transforming concepts into reality, and the introduction of the RTS X could very well serve as a launching pad for a BMW model. After all, the German brand has had a supermoto in the past, the G650X, which ceased production in 2009. With the market trending towards smaller displacement machines, BMW’s return to supermotos would be a strategic move.
Technical Details of the RTS X Supermoto
The heart of the RTS X concept is a 299cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine derived from TVS’s RTR 310 platform. This engine, known as RT-XD4, produces 35 horsepower and 28 Nm of torque, transmitted to the rear wheel through a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch and a standard bi-directional quickshifter. These numbers place the model directly in competition with the KTM 390 SMC-R, demonstrating TVS’s ambition to conquer space in the segment.
Regarding design, the RTS X meets all the requirements of a supermoto: long-travel suspension with robust inverted forks, 17-inch wheels with road-focused tires, and an aggressive, adventure-ready stance.
An Opportunity for BMW?
The possibility of a BMW G 310 X model inspired by the RTS X concept is more than a fantasy. Introducing a low-displacement supermoto to the German brand’s portfolio would be a triumphant return to this segment, offering a competitive and modern alternative. Moreover, the name “G 310 X” seems to fit perfectly into BMW’s nomenclature, becoming a natural choice to attract enthusiasts of lighter and more agile motorcycles.
If BMW seizes this opportunity, it could not only revitalize the global supermoto market but also strengthen its position with a younger and more adventurous audience.
The TVS RTS X Supermoto concept is a sample of how the supermoto segment continues to evolve, gaining traction among established and new brands. The long-standing collaboration between TVS and BMW leaves open the possibility of seeing a new BMW G 310 X model soon, bringing all the excitement and versatility of supermotos to an even wider audience. We can only wait and see if BMW recognizes this opportunity and transforms the RTS X concept into a global reality.
