Queen Camilla, 77, has opened up about her recent health challenges, revealing that her lingering chest infection was diagnosed as pneumonia. The candid admission came during the Qatar state visit, where the Queen explained her reduced participation in royal engagements as part of her ongoing recovery process.
A Candid Admission
Speaking at Buckingham Palace on December 3, Queen Camilla shared details of her illness with journalists during an event welcoming the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani. According to royal correspondent Cameron Walker, she addressed her diagnosis “in a very casual way,” explaining her inconsistent attendance at recent engagements.
The palace first described her illness as a “chest infection” in early November, confirming that it had been affecting her energy levels and prompting adjustments to her schedule. Post-viral fatigue, a common complication of pneumonia, continues to impact her recovery, limiting her ability to fully participate in outdoor and ceremonial events.
Adjusting Royal Duties
During the state visit, Queen Camilla skipped the traditional ceremonial welcome at Horse Guards Parade, instead arriving at Buckingham Palace later for a luncheon and exhibit viewing. A royal source described her condition as variable, stating, “Some days the Queen is on really good form. It’s just one of those things.”
Camilla also opted for a reduced role at the state banquet, appearing in photographs with the Amir and Sheikha Jawaher but forgoing participation in the receiving line. While her coughing has reportedly improved, the Queen continues to experience bouts of extreme tiredness.
The illness followed a demanding overseas trip to Australia and Samoa, compounded by her subsequent wellness retreat in India. Initially described as a “nasty bug,” the condition has necessitated flexibility in her royal schedule, with palace aides emphasizing that her recovery remains on track.
Looking Ahead
Despite her challenges, Queen Camilla remains focused on her duties. She is expected to participate in the farewell ceremonies for the Qatari delegation on December 4 and will later attend the Entente Littéraire Prize Ceremony in France alongside First Lady Brigitte Macron.
The state visit also saw increased involvement from the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, who stepped in to support royal duties. Middleton, who recently resumed public appearances after completing chemotherapy, joined the efforts to welcome the Qatari delegation.
As Queen Camilla continues to recover, the palace has reassured the public of her commitment to fulfilling the majority of her responsibilities, ensuring that her health remains a priority while balancing the demands of royal life.
