A marriage that is over and that has taken many people by surprise. Marc Márquez has spoken about the end of his relationship with Honda, stating once again that the «goodbye» could just be a see you soon. The new Gresini man reveals that he is still far from fighting for the title in the coming season, opting for caution.
‘It was emotional, it was overwhelming. It was something unrepeatable. Santi Hernández [former crew chief] is the person I’ll miss the most. The connection he made just by looking at me… I knew when I was making a change to the bike and whether he was convincing me or not. We have the peace of mind of having a friendship, of continuing to connect with each other’, he said in statements quoted by Marca.
‘When I was 12, I was already riding at 200 kilometres per hour, but I didn’t know how to put on a helmet, it was my father who had to do it. The following year I learnt how. I don’t have any unfulfilled dreams at a professional level. Ambition and challenges, yes, of course I have them’, he explained.
Looking ahead to the change of team, Márquez is cautious: ‘You have to build, you can’t start with the roof over your head. At the moment, I’m not among the three fastest riders. Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martín are the two riders to beat. The third could be Brad Binder, depending on how the KTM evolves. You can’t go into things with the mentality that you’re going to crash, otherwise you’ll end up crashing. With Ducati, it was an arrow, but you have to work on that love, because love at first sight…’.
‘At the moment I’m worried about all the rivals, especially those with a Ducati bike, they’re the ones I can really compare myself to and see that they can make a difference. I’m not in the top three, so I have to work hard to be in that position if I want to, and I intend to be in the near future. Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martín were the two riders who had the most complete year in 2023. Pecco, in terms of consistency and knowing how to deal with situations, and Jorge in terms of speed, has been faster than Pecco, but the truth is that the last two or three races haven’t gone as well as he’d hoped. But they’re the two drivers to beat in 2024. Brad Binder is a driver who has proved to be very fast and sometimes consistent. Technically, I think he’ll be in a position to fight for the World Championship’ Marc said to DAZN.
