Joan Mir has renewed his contract with Repsol Honda in MotoGP until 2026, giving a vote of confidence to the Japanese manufacturer despite the ongoing difficulties with results.
On one hand, he wants to achieve the goals he set when he arrived; on the other hand, the Palma de Mallorca rider is seeing commitment and effort. Asked in a press conference if he had demanded guarantees from Honda to renew, Mir replied:
– Yes. I was able to discuss a little bit what I think. But it’s not that I went there and I said, «I want this to renew». It’s that I’ve been complaining about many things during these two years that I was there, and step by step I was able to see that they are doing the things that I think that are the problem.
The 2020 champion is optimistic about the work being done, as he said: ‘I think now we are working in the same direction; before I was not able to see that, before it was more difficult. You can see that also in terms of staff they’re changing some people inside the box, they’re reorganizing a bit everything. Also the work that they are doing internally to have also a bigger test team for next year will be very helpful for us. This type of things is one of the reasons why I stay’.
