Ty Gibbs’ recent performances have ignited a simmering tension within the Joe Gibbs Racing camp. Despite his familial ties to the team owner, the 22-year-old’s underwhelming showings are causing concern. Since October 2024, Gibbs has concluded eight out of the last nine races in the 25th position or worse, casting a shadow over his potential in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Christopher Bell, his teammate, is on a winning streak with four consecutive victories under his belt, raising questions about whether Gibbs can salvage his season after the disappointing start. With 32 races remaining, it might be premature to discount Gibbs from the playoff contention. However, the brewing unrest in the camp is undeniable.
The young driver’s mother, Heather Gibbs, voiced her concern over her son’s performance. Despite two full seasons with his grandfather’s team and a part-time stint at 23XI Racing in 2022, Ty Gibbs is yet to achieve a victory. His best performance was securing the runner-up position at the Darlington Raceway last year. Although his familial ties afford him more leniency, the lack of results could jeopardize his position in the top-tier team, Joe Gibbs Racing.
Dan ‘Spider’ DiOrio, a NASCAR insider, urged fans to exercise patience with Ty. He mentioned that while Gibbs’ performance was a cause for concern, he had shown promise previously. He specifically cited his top-five finish at the Circuit of The Americas and a top 10 position in last year’s Las Vegas race. DiOrio suggested that Gibbs needs more experience to fully compete at the highest level.
Despite his current form, Gibbs can’t be dismissed as a non-contender. He made the playoffs last year but was eliminated in the first round. At the end of the season, he placed 15th in the driver’s standings, having led 417 laps. This was a significant improvement from his 112 laps led in 2023. With 8 top-5 finishes and 12 top-10s in 2024, Gibbs has proven that he can hold his own amongst the best. However, he is currently under scrutiny due to his teammates outperforming him.
Christopher Bell’s three victories in the first four races and Denny Hamlin’s strong performance have put additional pressure on Gibbs. Chase Briscoe made history as the first JGR driver to qualify first for the ‘Great American Race’. These successes have amplified the expectations on Gibbs to recover from his lackluster start.
The young driver is now working with a new crew chief, Tyler Allen, after Chris Gayle moved to work with Denny Hamlin. There have been several internal changes in the team during the off-season, which might be affecting Gibbs’ performance. If results don’t improve soon, Gibbs’ position in the team could be on the line.
Despite the challenges, Allen remains optimistic, stating that he expects things to run smoothly once everyone settles into their new roles. Gibbs has also experienced unfortunate incidents that have affected his results, including crashes at Daytona International Speedway and Atlanta, and mechanical failures at Phoenix Raceway and Circuit of The Americas. With the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the horizon, Gibbs will be looking to break his streak of bad luck and turn his season around.
