The proposed acquisition of MotoGP by Liberty Media, announced in April, is moving forward to a more in-depth analysis (Phase II) by the European Commission, as announced by the company today. This process marks a crucial step in finalizing the deal, which has already obtained all other necessary regulatory approvals.
With the start of the Phase II investigation, the parties involved have agreed to extend the review period to allow for a detailed analysis. Both parties express confidence in a positive decision from the European Commission.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports, expressed optimism about the next steps, stating: ‘We expect this acquisition to gain the requisite EU approval and are excited by the potential opportunity to work with Liberty Media. In the meantime, we remain committed to our strategy to take the sport to new heights and continue our impressive rate of growth, further expanding our global fanbase of over 500 million. 2024 saw season attendance of more than 3 million fans for the first time ever, and six tracks set new all-time records for their events. Our French GP broke the all-time attendance record. Looking ahead, we don’t just want more of the same, we want even more – and we are proud that our strategy is already beginning to deliver it. We hope fans are just excited as we are about the future and the incredible new season that is just around the corner’.
William Jackson, President of the Board of MotoGP (Dorna Sports) and Founder of Bridgepoint, highlighted the role of shareholders in the evolution of the sport:
– MotoGP is the most exciting sport in the world and has a great future ahead. Bridgepoint and CPPIB have been hugely supportive of the Company and sport and remain fully committed to helping Carmelo and the team continue to drive the fantastic success the sport has enjoyed during 18 years as shareholders together.
With a new brand identity under development since 2023, MotoGP seeks to transcend sport and achieve greater cultural relevance. Changes in management and a renewed strategic vision are driving this transformation, aligning with the goal of becoming a household name worldwide. The potential acquisition by Liberty Media is seen as an accelerator of this evolution, allowing MotoGP to further expand its global reach, especially among a young and diverse audience.
While the European Commission’s investigation continues, MotoGP remains focused on consolidating its position as one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment properties. The 2025 season promises to bring more records and consolidate the sport as a global phenomenon, with Liberty Media poised to play a key role in this journey.
