The format of the Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships has been slightly altered for the new season. There will still be three practice sessions of the same duration, but the first one – on Friday morning – will be free.
Last year, riders in both feeder categories to MotoGP had to worry about the combined standings and direct access to the second qualifying right from the first session. Therefore, they had little time to work without the pressure of the stopwatch.
This Monday, the championship organizers announced that in 2024 there will be a first free practice session on Friday morning – 35 minutes for Moto3 and 40 minutes for Moto2 – with lap times not counting towards determining the direct qualifiers for Q2. These calculations will now be made based only on the second and third practice sessions.
