One of the rumors circulating in the rider market was the potential return of Jorge Martín to KTM – where he competed in the lower categories until 2020 before making the leap to MotoGP with Ducati in 2021.
The Spaniard, who eventually did not secure a factory team spot with Borgo Panigale for 2025, moved to Aprilia. But was KTM ever a consideration? According to KTM Motorsports’ Director Pit Beirer, it was not.
The German stated to GPOne.com: ‘We are not very enthusiastic about his manager’s approach. So, in the end, we are financing the entire Moto2 project to have riders in our group, who will move up to MotoGP as soon as they are ready’.
Besides Martín’s manager, Beirer emphasized that he did not appreciate the timing of Martín’s switch from KTM to Ducati: ‘If someone leaves us hanging during the coronavirus phase, we will think twice about whether we want that rider back in the family sooner or later’.
