Fermín Aldeguer is seen as the main contender for the Moto2 title this year and began the season justifying the expectations: he led the free practice session of the Qatar Grand Prix, held this Friday in Losail.
Manuel González (QJMotor Gresini/Kalex) was the leader after the first laps, but the position changed hands several times until the Spaniard took a solid lead after nine minutes. González remained at the top for 20 minutes until he was overtaken by Jake Dixon (CFMoto Aspar/Kalex). The British rider didn’t hold onto the lead for long before being surpassed by Zonta van den Goorbergh (RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP/Kalex).
Just before the end, Aldeguer (Sync SpeedUp/Boscoscuro) clocked a time of 1m58.373s. He outpaced the Dutchman by 0.034s with a time that no one else beat. Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo/Kalex) finished third, with Dixon in fourth. González ended up in fifth, 0.303s off the top… with the same time as his teammate Albert Arenas.
