Usually, limited edition motorcycles are more commonly found in the sport or custom segment. Kymco, breaking the concept a bit, has a mid-sized scooter that didn’t even need to be “Limited Edition” to be interesting, but now it’s even more attractive. Let’s get to know the Xciting VS 400 Limited Edition!
The Taiwanese brand has always been one of the most appreciated here in Spain. In our country, now with another importer, they are trying to gain the recognition they deserve, and personally I find Kymco’s current range quite interesting. Price is always very important, and in this case Kymco Portugal recently managed to lower the price of many models available in our country, which is noteworthy. The current range includes three 50cc models, seven 125cc models, and five above this displacement, in addition to the various ATVs that the brand also sells.
And if for small daily trips or urban displacements a 125 cc fulfills without major limitations, with some longer rides on weekends mixed in a medium-displacement scooter may very well be the option, and that’s where this automatic comes in. In the brand’s photos it seemed to us that this Limited Edition was… too flashy, in other words, very showy in terms of decoration for the traditional segment. However, in person this is a really beautiful scooter and it won over many people wherever it went. Just be aware that the beautiful matte white will take some effort to keep clean. There’s no beauty without a flaw!
BIRTHDAY PARTY
Kymco created this version to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Xciting 400. Technically there are no differences from the base version that continues to be sold, but in this Limited Edition you can find a very sporty decoration, with red rims standing out, different stitching on the seats, and a commemorative anniversary plate. Everything else is the same!
We then talk about a model equipped with a single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, which delivers 34 hp of power at 7,250 rpm and offers a torque of 37.5 Nm at 5,650 rpm, while the chassis is the one we can normally find in this type of scooters: tubular frame, conventional telescopic fork at the front and double rear shock absorber, while the rims are 15 inches at the front and 14” at the rear, which mount Maxxis tires.THE BEST Aesthetics, build quality, engine and chassis TO IMPROVE Space under the seat, windshield adjustment
In terms of braking, we find two discs at the front, assisted by radial calipers – with ABS naturally – with both levers adjustable. The good aspect of the set continues in terms of lighting, as we find a super modern full LED front system, while in the rear section the lines are also very aerodynamic and with excellent visibility of the taillight. We still need to talk about the instrumentation, with on-board computer and instant speed prominently displayed, so that no one gets distracted by the presence of any radar, with other important elements being the presence of a traction control system and a keyless system, that is, an ignition without a key. As for the windshield, it is adjustable in various positions by hand, so that it does not obstruct visibility in the city and then offers excellent protection on the highway. And of course, there are two glove compartments, one of them with a USB input, and a place to store the helmet under the seat. Both levers are adjustable and the controls are functional, with the possibility of turning off the traction control. Next to the left handle, we have a parking brake.
Good rear shock absorbers, with a strong but smooth engine, just the way we like it. The build quality is high and the decoration is very tasteful in this Limited Edition.
We have two glove compartments in the front and a USB socket to charge devices.
The instrumentation with onboard computer is comprehensive enough, displaying the instant speed prominently.
The seats are of high quality but the driver’s seat could have a little more support. The passenger is well accommodated, but the space is also not a reference in the class.
The windshield is adjustable in several positions and is of high quality, but the adjustment has to be done manually and with the scooter stopped.
PROVEN QUALITY
This is a scooter of high quality and in fact we like almost everything. We can highlight the strong but smooth engine, the high quality of construction and finishes, and the good performance of the brakes and suspensions. On the other hand, we would like the windshield – which is of high quality – to be adjustable while riding, the space under the seat to be larger and more practical to access, and the seat to be a little more enveloping for greater comfort outside the city.
In theory, the solution of only lifting the driver’s seat to access the storage space is good, but in reality a conventional system is preferable to be able to organize everything in the best way. So why do we say this is a high-quality scooter? Because the build quality is really good. There are no vibrations or strange noises, the rearview mirrors are very good and don’t vibrate at all, and the engine shows a lot of health. It is strong in acceleration and recovery, surpasses 155 km/h and achieved an overall average of 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers, which can be considered normal. The keyless ignition system works well, without any issues, and the traction control is there but not felt (which is great), only if we exaggerate on a wet surface or on Portuguese cobblestone (or when we have both together…)
The suspensions also show a lot of quality, with a good balance between comfort and sportiness, and only in fast curves – on a surface that is not a billiard table – do we remember that this is not a sports scooter, although it disguises it very well. Regarding braking, we also have nothing to say here, as this Kymco can stop in a short time and with a good feel on the levers. In other words, this Xciting VS 400 offers a lot of fun and safety, and is not only one of the most interesting scooters in the Kymco range but also in the segment. And it is very beautiful, but if you want a more sober look while saving 200 euros, you can always opt for the base version!
