Starting in 2027, MotoGP will have new technical regulations, impacting various areas of the bike—from aerodynamics, which will be reduced with fewer development possibilities, to the engine.
One of the most significant changes will be to the engine. In order to make the bikes less fast, thereby enhancing safety, the displacement will be reduced from the current 1,000cc to 850cc.
The four-cylinder architecture will remain the same, so it won’t be a complete overhaul of the engine. Former rider Franco Uncini believes that the new rules will not require substantial investments.
The Italian stated to GPOne.com: ‘I don’t agree that they will start somewhat from scratch, because the reduction in displacement, in my opinion, is seen from the perspective of maintaining the existing engines. That is, they will reduce from 1,000cc to 850cc, but they definitely won’t change the engine completely, so they won’t need to make investments to completely redesign the engine and do it again. In my opinion, it’s a displacement reduction to keep the engine as it is’.
