David Alonso was recently recognized in Colombia as Athlete of the Year for his achievements in Moto3 during 2024. The Altius Awards were presented on Monday.
In the Non-Olympic category, the Moto3 World Champion was chosen as Athlete of the Year. Despite being born and raised in Spain, Alonso has always opted for Colombian nationality, which he holds thanks to his mother.
With this, he became the first Colombian to achieve a title in the Motorcycle World Championships. Speaking to the official website of the Colombian Olympic Committee, the new Moto2 rider said: ‘For me, it means a lot – not only that Colombia is giving me an award, but also showing its affection, and that is very important to me because I have the support of an entire country’.
Although motorcycle racing is seemingly an individual sport, Alonso dedicated this award to those who supported him: ‘Behind this award, there are many people who helped me not give up and cleared my doubts when there was fear. This recognition is for my family and all Colombians because at every circuit I went to, there was a flag waving, and they never stopped cheering’.
