Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has issued a rallying cry to his team, urging them to resolve the Red Bull RB20’s weaknesses and provide four-time world champion Max Verstappen with the car he needs to maintain his dominance in 2025.
Horner, reflecting on a tumultuous 2024 season, was full of praise for Verstappen’s resilience and skill, which carried him to yet another title despite significant challenges. But he made it clear: Verstappen deserves better machinery to defend his crown next year.
“The Best Driver Needs the Best Car”
Speaking after Verstappen clinched the title in Las Vegas, Horner highlighted the Dutchman’s extraordinary ability but stressed the need for Red Bull to step up:
“I’ve got a few more grey hairs this year, but I think next year will be a thriller. We’ve got the best driver in our car, and I think we’ve got the best team as well. So we’ll work very hard over the winter to improve on the weaknesses of the RB20.”
The RB20 started strong but struggled to maintain its edge against resurgent rivals McLaren and Ferrari. Verstappen endured a 10-race winless streak mid-season, a sharp contrast to his unrelenting dominance in 2022 and 2023. While Verstappen’s brilliance often masked the car’s flaws, Red Bull’s struggles became apparent as McLaren and Ferrari frequently outpaced them.
The RB20’s Achilles Heel
This season, the RB20 faced persistent issues, from inconsistent balance to poor tire management on certain circuits. Teams like McLaren capitalized on Red Bull’s weaknesses, creating tighter battles and increasing pressure on Verstappen. Horner admitted that Red Bull must address these problems to ensure Verstappen can compete on equal footing in 2025.
“We know our competitors will be stronger next year. The key is ensuring our car isn’t just competitive but consistently the best across all tracks.”
Max Verstappen: A Champion Under Fire
Throughout 2024, Verstappen faced significant criticism, not just for his car’s performance but for his aggressive driving style. Horner defended his star driver, emphasizing Verstappen’s mental fortitude and unfair scrutiny:
“He’s more sensitive than you think. Inevitably, he’s aware of the criticism, and some of it, I think, is very unfounded.”
Despite his detractors, Verstappen’s talent shone through, securing victories even when Red Bull lacked the fastest car. His win from 17th on the grid in Brazil was hailed as one of the all-time great performances.
2025: The Stakes Are Higher
With McLaren and Ferrari closing the gap, and Mercedes also showing signs of resurgence, Red Bull’s offseason work will be crucial. The team will need to refine its design philosophy, improve aerodynamics, and enhance tire performance to fend off their rivals.
For Verstappen, the stakes are just as high. Now a four-time champion, he’ll enter the 2025 season aiming to cement his legacy further. Horner’s confidence in Verstappen’s abilities remains unshaken:
“Max is one of the greatest drivers of this era. He’s relentless, and when he’s in a competitive car, there’s no one better.”
The Road Ahead
As Formula 1 looks ahead to a thrilling 2025, all eyes will be on Red Bull to see if they can rise to the challenge. With Verstappen in the driver’s seat and Horner leading the charge, the team has the tools to succeed—but they’ll need to execute flawlessly to maintain their edge in an increasingly competitive field.
