Ángel Piqueras topped the timesheets in the first free practice session of the Moto3 Solidarity GP of Barcelona, conducted under chilly conditions with temperatures barely above 12ºC.
Adrián Fernández (Leopard Racing/Honda), who later suffered a crash, initially led after the first flying laps and consolidated his position before being overtaken by Daniel Holgado.
The Spanish rider from Red Bull GasGas Tech3 held the lead for over 15 minutes before being displaced by Joel Kelso (BOE Motorsports/KTM). Meanwhile, Tatsuki Suzuki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) endured a dramatic crash at Turn 5 but fortunately escaped unscathed.
Kelso’s stint at the top lasted less than two minutes as Piqueras (Leopard Racing/Honda) set a quicker lap. Shortly after, David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports/KTM) claimed the lead but was dethroned in the closing moments by Piqueras, who recorded the fastest lap of 1m47.281s.
Muñoz settled for second, 0.410s adrift, while reigning champion David Alonso (CFMOTO Valresa Aspar) took third, 0.616s off the pace. Kelso and Scott Ogden (FlletSafe Honda MLav Racing) completed the top five.
