Alex Albon believes Carlos Sainz’s arrival at Williams for the 2025 Formula 1 season will elevate his own performance, providing a fresh benchmark to measure against while also injecting valuable top-team experience into the squad.
Sainz brings a wealth of experience
After four victories with Ferrari, Sainz joins Williams following the Scuderia’s blockbuster signing of Lewis Hamilton. His move marks a significant step for Williams as the team aims to climb back up the grid in 2025 and beyond.
Albon, who has been the team’s leading figure since joining in 2022, is optimistic about what Sainz can bring to the table. “Carlos’s experience at Ferrari, where he was competing at a high level every weekend, is going to be invaluable for Williams,” Albon said.
A new dynamic for Albon
For Albon, having a proven race winner as a teammate presents both a challenge and an opportunity. “It’s a great challenge. For myself, it’s great to be able to have someone who I can directly compare against,” Albon admitted.
He acknowledged that being the team’s most experienced driver has sometimes been a double-edged sword. “I feel like it’s always been a bit of a burden to me in some ways because I feel like no one really knows where I stand. I have that confidence in myself that I’m pretty good.”
With Sainz on board, Albon hopes the internal competition will allow him to showcase his true potential.
Fresh perspective for Williams
Sainz’s arrival also brings a fresh perspective to Williams as it looks to rebuild. Albon believes that Sainz’s insights from Ferrari, a top-performing team, will be pivotal for their development.
“When I joined Williams from Red Bull, there was a lot I wanted to give to improve the team. But now, after three years, having someone with a fresh mindset and experience like Carlos will be really helpful,” Albon explained.
He added that he’s eager to learn from Sainz’s input: “I’m going to be very open-eared — just wanting to hear what he has to say about the car and what direction he believes we need to go in.”
Williams eyes progress
Williams has shown gradual improvements in recent seasons, and the addition of Sainz could mark a turning point for the team. With Albon embracing the challenge of a strong teammate, Williams seems poised to continue its upward trajectory.
The duo’s combined experience from Red Bull, Ferrari, and their respective journeys through Formula 1 will undoubtedly strengthen the team’s efforts to become a consistent midfield contender once more.
