Injury Woes Continue for the Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s depth has taken another hit as forward Ousmane Dieng has been diagnosed with a small fracture in his right ring finger. The injury occurred during a G League game with the Oklahoma City Blue on Friday, sidelining Dieng for at least three to four weeks.
Dieng, a 2022 lottery pick, has been a rotational player for the Thunder this season, appearing in 16 games. In limited minutes (11.6 per game), he has averaged 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds. His last NBA appearance came in an 11-minute stint against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.
A Frontcourt in Flux
The Thunder’s frontcourt has been in disarray due to persistent injuries:
- Chet Holmgren: Out indefinitely with a hip injury.
- Jaylin Williams: Recovering from a hamstring issue.
- Ousmane Dieng: Now sidelined with a fractured finger.
Dieng’s injury came just as Isaiah Hartenstein and Kenrich Williams returned to action, prompting his temporary assignment to the G League.
Dieng’s Growing Role
Since being drafted in 2022, Dieng has shown flashes of potential but has yet to establish a consistent role.
- 2023-24 Season Stats: 16 games, 3.5 PPG, 2.6 RPG.
- 2022-23 Season Stats: 33 games, primarily off the bench.
- Rookie Campaign: Played in 39 games, showing promise as a versatile forward.
The Thunder demonstrated their faith in Dieng’s long-term development by exercising his $6.67 million team option for the 2025-26 season last month.
What’s Next for OKC?
The Thunder, sitting in the middle of the Western Conference playoff race, will need to lean on their remaining healthy frontcourt players as they await Dieng’s return. With Holmgren and Williams also out, the team’s ability to compete hinges on contributions from veterans like Isaiah Hartenstein and the versatility of Kenrich Williams.
Dieng’s injury timetable means his status will be reassessed in mid-December. For now, OKC will hope to stabilize their roster as they navigate a challenging Western Conference.
