Marc Marquez has made headlines with his upcoming move to Ducati in 2025, emphasizing the necessity of being “selfish” in MotoGP to secure the best equipment. Speaking on Spanish radio show El Larguero, Marquez explained, “At this level, you have to be selfish. Everyone wants the best, and the best bike is the Ducati.” He credited Gigi Dall’Igna for his transfer, noting Ducati’s focus on his performance with the GP23.
“I am in Ducati thanks to Gigi Dall’Igna. I don’t know what they promised Martin. I can say what they explained to me: the Ducati engineers have analyzed my growth with the 2023 bike in a particular way.”
Marquez acknowledged that racing with the GP23 meant he was not competing on equal terms, highlighting the incremental improvements made year-on-year that translate to significant time differences over a race. He stated, “Usually, you improve by two-tenths per lap each year, which accumulates to about four seconds by the end of a race.” This gap motivated his insistence on a factory team spot rather than remaining with a satellite team.
Discussing the 2024 season, Marquez admitted he is not yet at the level of Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin but remains optimistic about achieving his first Ducati win this season. He emphasized the importance of patience and not having overly high expectations.
Marc also shed light on the market dynamics that influenced his decision, expressing confidence that Jorge Martin, despite his move to Aprilia, will still be a strong contender for the title. “Knowing Dall’Igna, Jorge can still fight for the championship. Ducati is honest, and you can win the title on different bikes,” Marquez stated. He remains focused on his current performance and is confident that his first victory with Ducati will come in 2024, although he remains cautious about setting specific expectations.
This announcement has sparked discussions within the MotoGP community, highlighting the intense competition and strategic maneuvers that define the sport. Marquez’s move to Ducati not only aims to bolster his chances of winning but also reshapes the competitive landscape for the upcoming seasons.
