Joan Mir is in the final year of his contract with Repsol Honda in MotoGP. The results are far below his potential, not through his own fault, but due to a bike that is the least competitive in the current field. And that could motivate his departure, if he finds a more enticing project.
The 2020 world champion stated that, in the coming weeks, he needs to have his near future more defined: ‘Probably in Assen I need to have things clearer about what I want to do‘.
At this moment, Mir admitted that he does not have clear ideas about what to do next season, needing to first know what options he has available before making a decision:
– I need to have all the options on my table to decide on something. Saying that I know perfectly where I want to go is not my case right now. I don’t know where I want to go. So, I will wait until I have all the offers on the table and then I will choose.
In addition to Repsol Honda, only two factory teams have officially open spots at the moment – Aprilia and Yamaha. However, both manufacturers seem more inclined to keep their current riders (Maverick Viñales and Álex Rins, respectively).
On the other hand, in the satellite teams the scenario is different, with six spots to be filled in those linked to Ducati, one in LCR Honda (which, naturally, will not be an option for Mir), another in Red Bull GasGas Tech3 and two in Trackhouse Racing. There, the Mallorcan would find team manager Davide Brivio, with whom he developed a successful partnership at Suzuki.
