This Saturday, June 1, marked a historic day in the Isle of Man TT as Michael Dunlop achieved his 26th victory by triumphing in the first Supersport race, thus equaling the record held by his uncle Joey Dunlop.
Riding for MD Racing/Yamaha, Michael Dunlop started the race in third place on the first lap but quickly took the lead on the next lap, pulling away from his competitors. In the end, he finished 8.5s ahead of Davey Todd (Powertoolmate Ducati). This victory not only marked Dunlop’s 12th win in the Supersport category but also his 26th overall, allowing him to match his uncle Joey’s record for the most wins. Additionally, this was his 40th podium finish, matching another of Joey Dunlop’s records.
Todd secured his best-ever result on the Isle of Man with a second-place finish and set the fastest lap ever recorded on a Ducati at the circuit. Dean Harrison (Honda Racing) initially led the race but ultimately finished in third, completing the podium. James Hillier (Bournemouth Kawasaki) and James Hind (North Lincs Components/Suzuki) rounded out the top five.
The 2024 Isle of Man TT is not over yet, with another week of racing still to come. By the end of the event on June 8, Michael Dunlop has the opportunity to stand alone as the all-time record holder for victories at the TT.
