David Alonso made a strong start to the Moto3 Spanish Grand Prix. After leading the free practice on Friday morning with over a second gap, he once again stood out at the top of the first practice session.
Throughout the session, the lead alternated between Alonso (CFMoto Gaviota Aspar) and Iván Ortolá (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM). Jacob Roulstone (Red Bull GasGas Tech3) also briefly held the best time.
Indeed, it was the Australian who lost the lead when Alonso set the best time of the day – 1m43.710s. It’s also a new Moto3 lap record at the Jerez circuit. With that, the Colombian was 0.969s faster than Roulstone.
Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) finished third, already more than a minute behind the leader, while championship leader Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GasGas Tech3) ended up in fourth. The top five was completed by David Almansa (Rivacold Snipers Team/Honda).
