Electric motorcycles clearly represent the future of our two-wheeled passion. Although there are many e-bikes and scooters on the market for utility purposes, we are always curious when manufacturers release electric motorcycles designed for motorcycle enthusiasts. We have already seen a series of launches from manufacturers around the world, and now the Chinese brand Niu is going to launch its electric motorcycle RQi in Europe.
The Niu RQi is by no means a new concept. In fact, it has been around for almost four years. First presented at CES 2020 in Las Vegas, the RQi looked promising with its impressive power of 40 hp and a top speed of 160 km/h. Unfortunately, a series of delays prevented Niu from launching the motorcycle, and eventually, the RQi was redesigned to be more beginner-friendly. In 2022, the RQi was introduced with lower power, similar to that of a 125 cc motorcycle – a measure clearly aimed at satisfying beginner European riders with an A1 driving license.
That being said, it seems that Niu is now finally ready to launch the RQi, at least in Europe. Like the new 2022 version, the RQi unfortunately maintains its performance values for beginner riders with a 7,500-watt electric motor that produces the equivalent of about 11 hp of power. The motor has a lot of torque, with alleged 450 Nm that will certainly raise a lot of expectations. Niu claims that the RQi has a top speed of 110 km/h and can go from 0 to 50 km/h in 2.9 seconds.
As for the battery, it is powered not by one, but by two units of 72 volts and 36 ampere-hours with a combined range of about 200 km per charge. Complementing the impressive powertrain is a series of superior quality components, such as Pirelli tires, a Brembo radial caliper at the front, and dual-channel ABS. Niu claims that the RQi has plenty of torque and that the inclusion of a traction control system keeps all this torque under control. There is also fully LED lighting, keyless start, and front and rear-mounted cameras for added safety. Lastly, like many technology-focused electric motorcycles, the RQi offers GPS location.
As for the price and availability, Niu states that the RQi will start arriving at European showrooms in the first quarter of 2024.
