The Honda NSR500V, one of motorcycling’s most iconic bikes, is back in the spotlight. Created to compete in the legendary 500cc World Championship of the 1990s, this machine not only defined an era but remains highly coveted. Now, 27 years after its debut, a nearly new unit is up for auction, offering collectors a unique chance to acquire a true two-wheeled icon.
The Making of a Legend
In the 1990s, the 500cc World Championship was motorcycling’s pinnacle. Factory bikes like the mighty four-cylinder NSR500 were beyond most private teams’ reach due to high costs and technical complexity. Honda developed the NSR500V as a more accessible yet competitive alternative.
The bike’s secret lay in its simple design and lightness. Featuring a 100-degree V-twin engine, it produced 135 hp – less than the four-cylinder’s 180+ hp but compensated with significantly lower weight. While four-cylinders had to weigh 130 kg, the NSR500V weighed just 102 kg, a crucial difference making it unbeatable on technical circuits where agility was key.
A Promising Start
The NSR500V debuted at the 1996 Malaysian Grand Prix with a performance that stunned the motorcycling world. Tadayuki Okada rode it to an unexpected pole position, outpacing even Mick Doohan and Àlex Crivillé on their powerful four-cylinder NSR500s. Though it didn’t dominate the championship, the NSR500V proved competitive and earned its place in racing history.
From Competition to Collecting
Between 1996 and 2001, Honda produced just 22 NSR500V units, making it a rare and valuable collector’s item. The unit currently at auction stands out as the first one produced, originally built for exhibitions and events. This bike was never used on track and remains nearly untouched, with protective plastic still on the carburetor inlets.
However, years of display have left some wear: a small dent in the tank, scratches on the lower fairing, and a throttle cable needing replacement. Additionally, to run again, the bike needs a complete overhaul, including fluid changes, new tires, and engine inspection.
A Timeless Engineering Masterpiece
The NSR500V’s design reflects Honda’s commitment to performance and innovation. The V-Twin engine was compact and powerful for its time, while the aluminum frame and carbon fiber subframe ensured a light, rigid structure. The brakes, suspension, and magnesium racing wheels completed an impressive package that still excites motorcycle enthusiasts today.

Currently, the auction price exceeds 160,000 euros, with bidding ending December 7th. Given the interest, the price will likely rise further, unsurprisingly: opportunities to acquire an almost-new Grand Prix motorcycle after nearly three decades are extremely rare.
