In a shocking and deeply disturbing case, a school bus driver in Colombia has been arrested after allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a young girl who managed to escape after 12 years in captivity. Carlos Humberto Grisales Higuita now faces multiple charges, including simple kidnapping, sexual abuse with a minor under 14 years of age, sexual acts with a minor under 14 years of age, and pornography involving a person under 18 years of age.
According to prosecutors, the girl was just 7 years old when she was kidnapped by Grisales Higuita in 2012. He took her to a home in Medellín’s city center where he subjected her to years of sexual abuse and manipulation. Shockingly, he convinced her that the horrors she endured were normal.
During the entire period she was missing, Grisales Higuita changed the girl’s name and constantly moved her between different locations in Medellín and Bello, Antioquia. This calculated effort ensured that she remained hidden from authorities and her loved ones for over a decade.
The girl’s life took an even darker turn as she was prevented from attending school or having any contact with the outside world while in captivity. This isolation further perpetuated her victimization and made it incredibly challenging for anyone to discover her whereabouts.
It wasn’t until the girl turned 16 that she mustered up the courage to confront Grisales Higuita about his alleged mistreatment. Unfortunately, this confrontation led to her being locked inside the home. However, in February 2024, she managed to escape from her captor’s clutches and find freedom at last.
Authorities apprehended Grisales Higuita shortly after the girl’s miraculous escape. Despite overwhelming evidence against him, he has denied all charges leveled against him. The legal proceedings will now determine his fate and deliver justice for the young girl who endured unimaginable suffering.
Cases like these serve as a chilling reminder of the horrors that can befall innocent individuals, particularly children, at the hands of those they should trust. It is crucial for society to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities.
