Jorge Martín is on the verge of becoming MotoGP world champion. If he secures the title this weekend in Barcelona, he will have the right to use the #1 next season.
As is well-known, the Spaniard will move to Aprilia next season. If he becomes champion and decides to use the champion’s number, the #1 will feature on the fairings of one of his bikes.
Albert Valera, Martín’s manager, was asked during the official MotoGP live broadcast whether the contract with Aprilia includes a clause for using the #1 plate. He replied: ‘No. Of course, they would probably be happy to see the number #1. But that’s something that we actually haven’t even thought about, because first, we need to win the championship. That’s the plan’.
The agent emphasized that achieving this goal will not be easy: ‘It’s not easy; even though it looks easy, it’s not easy. So, we need to get through the weekend, and see if we get the goal that we want. And then we’ll see if he is going to use the number #1 or the #89. But he will think about it if everything goes well’.
