Alex Lowes set the pace on the first day of the World Superbike Championship in Cremona. Due to the morning rain, only the second free practice session was representative, as all the riders set their best times in that session.
Due to the conditions, with a wet track drying up, only 11 riders recorded times in FP1, with Sam Lowes (Elf Marc VDS/Ducati) being the fastest, beating his brother Alex (Kawasaki) by 1.758s.
In the afternoon, the track was dry, and the session ran without any constraints. Only three riders led the session, with Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team/Ducati) spending the most time at the front.
However, just minutes before the end, Alex Lowes set the best time of 1m29.685s, beating the Italian by 0.081s. Nicolò Bulega (Aruba.it Ducati) set the third-best time, 0.151s behind, followed by Tito Rabat (Kawasaki Puccetti) and Andrea Iannone (Team GoEleven/Ducati), who completed the top five ahead of Álvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Ducati).
FP2 was marked by a heavy crash between Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW) and Alessandro Delbianco (Yamaha Motoxracing), where the Italian «swept» the Dutch rider after falling.
