This summer, Andrea Dovizioso completed his first MotoGP tests for Yamaha, replacing the injured Cal Crutchlow. Currently, it’s a temporary relationship without any long-term commitment, but it could become serious for 2025… potentially putting Augusto Fernández’s future in MotoGP at risk.
According to the website paddock-gp.com, the Italian is being considered for a test rider role – a position that was believed to be reserved for Augusto Fernández.
However, a scenario where both could share responsibilities is possible: Dovizioso focusing on testing and development, while Fernández gets opportunities to compete in wildcard entries. Crutchlow has been dealing with physical issues in recent months, putting his future in doubt in this context.
It wouldn’t be unprecedented for a manufacturer to have more than two test riders. For example, KTM has Dani Pedrosa, Jonas Folger, and Pol Espargaró, each with different roles within the team. And in 2025, Honda has already confirmed Aleix Espargaró and Takaaki Nakagami, with Stefan Bradl expected to continue as well.
