The race at the MotoGP San Marino GP was marked by brief rain showers that led some riders – including Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati), who was fighting for top positions – to switch to bikes with rain tyres.
This was a risky move that ultimately didn’t pay off, as the showers were brief, and the track didn’t get wet enough to require rain tyres. Those who switched had to return to bikes with slicks.
Marc Márquez (Gresini/Ducati), who won the race, stayed on track throughout. In a press conference, the Spanish rider explained that he decided to follow Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) but defended Martín’s decision to switch bikes, saying:
– Of course Martín’s strategy was not very crazy, because if in that lap continued the same amount of water, then he would have the best strategy. But it’s true that I said, «I will follow the local guy». And the local guy stayed out, so he knows better than me. And then I said, «if he stays out, I stay out». All the Italian riders stayed out.
