If David Alonso was already a favorite, he reinforced that status in the free practice for the Austrian GP of Moto3. The championship leader was the fastest, with over two-tenths of a second advantage.
In the first ten minutes, the lead constantly changed hands, but after about 14 minutes, Alonso (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar) took the top position for the fourth time.
The Colombian improved shortly after and stayed at the top for more than a quarter of an hour before being overtaken by Iván Ortolá (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM)… who, within a few seconds, was beaten by teammate Ryusei Yamanaka and Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GasGas Tech3).
With his final lap, Alonso set a new Moto3 record at the Red Bull Ring: 1m40.331s. Holgado was 0.242s behind, with Joel Kelso (BOE Motorsports/KTM) in third and David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports/KTM) in fourth. Ortolá finished in fifth.
