Somkiat Chantra is the big surprise at the German Moto2 Grand Prix. After finishing third in free practice, the Thai rider set a new lap record to lead the first practice session this afternoon at Sachsenring.
After the first few laps, Chantra Idemitsu Honda Team Asia/Honda) was already leading the timesheet, holding the position for almost half an hour until being surpassed by Fermín Aldeguer (MB Conveyors SpeedUp/Boscoscuro).
The Spaniard only held the lead for less than two minutes before being overtaken by Jake Dixon (CFMoto Polarcube Aspar/Kalex). However, the British rider couldn’t maintain the lead as Chantra set the record lap that earned him first place: 1m22.698s, surpassing the British rider by 0.351s.
In third place was Aldeguer, followed by Bo Bendsneyder (Preicanos Racing Team/Kalex) and Arón Canet (Fantic Racing/Kalex) closing out the top five ahead of Marcos Ramírez (OnlyFans American Racing Team/Kalex) who led the free practice session. Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro), the championship leader, finished seventh.
