Joan Mir is one of the many MotoGP riders who does not have a contract for 2025. He is currently with Repsol Honda, and being the least competitive constructor at the moment, the results are far below what he has already achieved, as evidenced by his 2020 title.
And although the bike is a factor in the equation, the Spanish rider admitted that he doesn’t have the same negotiating power he once had: ‘People consider the bike you ride. One thing I can say is that no one leaves Honda better than they entered. When I came to Honda, I had several offers. I could go wherever I wanted at the time. And now it’s not like that; I have to wait for others, they have priority at the moment because I have to prove myself again‘.
In a world where performance is demanded at every moment, Mir admitted that the past is not as important: ‘This is a bit of reality. It doesn’t matter what you did in the past. Now the others who are getting the results at the moment, four or five riders, have priority and we are next in line‘.
Although he has already been a MotoGP world champion, the rider from Palma de Mallorca downplayed his value, citing the example of Marc Márquez who had to go through Gresini: ‘Marc also had value when he moved to Gresini, not to a factory team, and his value is higher than mine. This is a bit of reality. Nowadays MotoGP is like this‘.
