Maverick Viñales secured the pole position for the MotoGP Valencia Grand Prix in an authoritative manner, with a new lap record at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit. As for the title contenders, Francesco Bagnaia will start from second and Jorge Martín from sixth.
In the first attacks on the clock, Aprilia had the upper hand, with Viñales in first and Aleix Espargaró in second. Bagnaia (Ducati) started in eighth and Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati) in 11th.
The classification changed with the second flying laps. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) took the lead, Martín rose to second, and Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM) became third, while Bagnaia dropped to 11th place.
With about five minutes to go, Bagnaia became the new leader. But the decisions were far from being made. Two minutes before the checkered flag, Viñales was the first to lap in the 1m28s range in history and beat Bagnaia. Miller improved but dropped to third.
