MotoGP does not remain static, there is a constant technical and technological evolution. However, in recent years, the increasing relevance of technology and, above all, aerodynamics in performance has raised some criticism, with some considering that the rider has less influence than in the past. This is the case with Carlos Checa.
The former rider mentioned on Fred’s Cycling Obssession podcast that MotoGP is following some mistakes made by Formula 1: ‘When it comes to technology, we may be going a bit too far, I think we are making some of the same mistakes as Formula 1, but they are limiting it a bit because they noticed it. In motorcycles, it seemed very difficult for it to happen, but Gigi appeared and was able to conceptually change the way motorcycles are handled and everyone followed suit‘.
For Checa, the role of the rider is still decisive, but it has lost some importance: ‘The rider still has a lot of influence, but in recent years, it has changed a bit with aerodynamics. Either you apply that technology, or you’re out. […]. Technology has come very close to the limit, and with it, the riders. Before, the rider had more influence, but in some aspects, it has been lost‘.
