The opening round of the Superbike World Championship could hardly have gone better for Yari Montella. The Barni Spark Racing Team rider launched his title bid with two wins in as many races at Phillip Island – this after never being able to finish on the top step of the podium last year.
Quoted by the official championship website, the rider did not hide his satisfaction with this great start: ‘It was truly amazing; I think it was something that no one expected. I’m happy; I want to stay focused on the next race, but at the same time enjoy the moment‘.
Despite the double victory, Montella is aware that there is a long way to go this season, and that is what he is now focused on: ‘It’s only the first round and I have 22 ahead. My focus is on Barcelona and I’m not thinking about the championship. Last year, Barcelona was my worst round of the season, but I hope to be better, to show the potential like this. Then, we’ll see how it goes‘.
