Supermotos are a lot of fun, as these machines are essentially off-road motorcycles with sportbike tires.
Naturally, the torque and responsiveness of electric motors seem to be the perfect combination for a lightweight supermoto platform, and Italian manufacturer Fantic seems eager to take advantage of that. Fantic has always been concerned with off-road; even their road models, like the Caballero range, have integrated off-road capability. They also have a performance-oriented range of motorcycles, with the XM50 functioning as a two-stroke machine compliant with Euro 5 regulations. As such, the Motard-EV is clearly a step towards the future, although it is currently just a concept.
And what an interesting concept it is. Lightweight electric motorcycles with a focus on fun and pleasure are always welcome, and the Motard-EV concept is precisely that. The Motard-EV was just one of the many electric motorcycle concepts presented at last year’s EICMA, and it is evident that there is a strong market of enthusiasts when it comes to two-wheeled electric motorcycles.
Fantic says that the Motard-EV weighs no more than 95 kg, so it is as light as a 50cc two-stroke dirt bike. Speaking of which, the Motard-EV is supposedly classified as a moped, so modest power is to be expected to satisfy beginner riders. This also means that the motorcycle can be ridden with a car driving license in some parts of Europe.
At the time of writing this article, it is important to mention that the Fantic Motard-EV is only a prototype. It would be expected for a motorcycle like this to undergo many tests to maintain its lightweight construction and respectable performance. However, Fantic is no stranger to the world of electric mobility, as we have already discussed several of their electric offerings in the past. Bicycles like the Issimo quickly went from concept to reality, so there is a good chance that the Motard-EV could be launched to the public soon.
