The first victory of Marc Márquez riding a Ducati was within reach. The Gresini rider led the Sprint race of the Spanish GP until four laps from the end he crashed and lost several positions. He managed to return to the track to finish in seventh place.
The eight-time world champion stated: ‘I was closer than in Austin, but it still wasn’t enough. Only four laps. We didn’t finish those four laps to complete a perfect day, but the good thing is that for me today was a pretty good day: pole position, we understood that we are fast in wet conditions. Then in the Sprint race we were the fastest, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish the race. I did the hardest part, but then I crashed in the easiest part of the race – like most riders, I would say. I went through a wet part and lost the front. But the good thing is that we are always getting closer‘.
Márquez ensured that he did not notice the wet area that caused him to crash, neither at the time of the incident, nor in the previous laps, being pleased to have been able to finish after what happened:
– Honestly, I didn’t realize there was that wet part throughout the race. Because I saw that there were some wet parts on entry, but in acceleration I didn’t see that wet part. And then, indeed on that lap I braked a bit earlier and kept more speed in the corner. But maybe it was only 10cm, because it was a 10cm part. I went 10cm inside or outside, I don’t know. I don’t know if I was passing inside or outside that part in the previous laps, because I wasn’t riding aggressively. But unfortunately I lost the front and couldn’t recover. But still we finished the race in seventh, so it was good.
