Between last Thursday and Saturday, Sepang hosted the MotoGP shakedown, mainly aimed at test riders. Several manufacturers introduced many innovations on their bikes, including new aerodynamic devices – a path that has been increasingly followed, but which Marc Márquez is not a fan of.
Asked about his impressions of the shakedown in Sepang, the Spaniard commented specifically on aerodynamics: ‘I saw some photos of the shakedown, some new aerodynamics – it looks like Formula 1! I hate that path, but it’s the path we’re following. The rules allow us, so they will go there. But when I see that we always have more and more aerodynamics, personally I don’t like it. But, well, you have to adapt. I also saw that the lap times were very fast for the first two days. It will be interesting to see how we finish these three days‘.
For Márquez, it would be preferable to focus development on areas other than aerodynamics, recalling the negative impact that aerodynamics can have on the spectacle: ‘It’s a compromise, but when you have aerodynamics, it will be more difficult to follow the bikes and overtake. This is what happens in Formula 1. But in MotoGP, the good thing is that we can have a big group. But now if you are going to develop more and more aerodynamics, I would prefer to develop the chassis area, tires, engine, instead of aerodynamics, because it will affect the spectacle that is the main race. For the spectacle, it doesn’t matter if you are 0.3s faster or 0.3s slower. People want to see overtakes and battles‘.
