One of Valentino Rossi’s adversaries during part of his motorcycle racing career was Loris Capirossi. They fought for titles and victories over several years, especially in the 250cc class in 1998 where they finished just 23 points apart in the top two positions.
When asked by Corriere della Sera if he envied Il Dottore in any way, Capirossi denied it, showing great appreciation for his fellow countryman who achieved nine world titles:
– No. Valentino was simply better than me. He was formidable on the track and perhaps, unlike me, very decisive in his choices. He changed teams, chose the people who would work with him. I was more complacent. He moved to cars and will stop competing at 50 or 60 years old. He has a passion, an endless vitality. Valentino is eternal.
