The urban mobility is undergoing a revolution driven by two wheels, especially among young people under 40 years old.
A survey conducted by Kantar Italia, commissioned by Confindustria ANCMA, analyzed the usage habits and purchasing preferences of bicycles and scooters in urban areas.
The survey focused on over 1500 interviews (1000 users of electric and traditional bicycles and scooters and over 530 users of cars and public transport in cities with more than 80,000 inhabitants), revealing a growing interest in two-wheeled vehicles. While the scooter loses the “lightness” and “carefreeness” of its origins and is seen as the main competitor to the car, the most effective alternative to four-wheeled vehicles in urban traffic, a rational and thoughtful image of the electric scooter prevails, but still very limited to some users.
The year 2020 marked a turning point, with 74% of electric bike owners and 65% of electric scooter owners purchasing them in the last four years. The most popular bicycles are city bikes, followed by mountain bikes, while in the case of scooters, the 125cc remains the most popular. The research revealed that 77% of e-bike or battery scooter owners also use public transport, highlighting the need to increase the integration of these means in local transportation.
However, safety remains a concern, especially for traditional cyclists. Data reveals a high level of satisfaction among users of both means, but concerns have also arisen regarding safety and theft, especially in the case of electrified vehicles.
