Tony Arbolino set the pace in the first phase of qualifying for the Moto2 Spanish Grand Prix. In this way, he secured one of the last four spots in the pole position discussion for the intermediate category in Jerez.
After the first flying laps, the qualifying zone was occupied by Jeremy Alcoba (Yamaha VR46 Master Camp/Kalex), Dennis Foggia (Italtrans Racing Team/Kalex), Senna Agius, and Darryn Binder (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP/Kalex).
The table changed significantly in the second flying laps, with Binder moving to the top, Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team/Kalex) to second, Agius to third, and Jorge Navarro (Klint Forward) to fourth.
Arbolino (Elf Marc VDS/Kalex) was the next pilot to take the lead, while Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo/Kalex) improved to fourth. This way, Moreira moved out of the qualifying zone, but the Brazilian reacted immediately to take the lead. Alcoba moved up to second… before both were overtaken by Arbolino.
Times continued to drop and Bo Bendsneyder (Pertamina Mandalika GAS UP Team/Kalex) reached fourth position… pushing Binder out of the most favorable positions.
Until the end, Arbolino did not lose the lead, but Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo/Kalex) reached second place, finishing 0.357s behind the top and relegating Moreira to third. Alcoba also improved, leaving Bendsneyder out.
