The MXGP of Sardinia, part of the MXGP Motocross World Championship, kicked off this Saturday, and Tim Gajser won the qualifying race in Riola Sardo… by a very narrow margin.

The opening laps were led by Ruben Fernández (Honda HRC), with Glenn Coldenhoff (Fantic) chasing him and Gajser (Honda HRC) in third. The Slovenian moved up to second on the third lap, when Lucas Coenen (Red Bull KTM) also overtook Coldenhoff.

Gajser then set his sights on Fernández and, on the sixth lap, managed to take the lead – one he would not relinquish. The Spaniard, meanwhile, also lost position to Coenen at the same time.

From that point on, the battle for the win was between Gajser and Coenen. The four-time MXGP champion came out on top, but the Belgian pushed him all the way, finishing just 0.332s behind. Fernández didn’t have the pace to keep up with the two rivals, ending up third over ten seconds back. Coldenhoff and Kevin Horgmo (Team Honda Motoblouz) completed the top five.
