There’s finally some action on track beyond the Safety Car at Phillip Island, with the sun even shining and the drivers who made Q2 directly found, in a session dominated by Ángel Piqueras, but where the times didn’t improve significantly, despite there being conditions on track to do so.

After the chaos of the last few hours at Phillip Island, which led to the cancellation of MotoGP FP1, the rain gave way and allowed Moto3 to get out on track, with the track, despite the wet conditions on the asphalt.

The bravest riders wasted no time getting out onto the track and not even five minutes later Taiyo Furusato crashed, fortunately not seriously, although the bike hit the #72’s head.

David Alonso was one of the first to put a time on the board with a lap of 1:48.513s, but this would be bettered, as expected, by Ángel Piqueras shortly afterwards, to 1:47.368s, with him then coming in second 46th, in 1:46.295s.

With almost 15 minutes of the session elapsed, Piqueras was the highlight and 1.7s ahead of Alonso. The benchmark lap at this stage was 1:45.753s.

Piqueras was on a roll and again improved his own record to 1:44.949s, with Alonso within 1.042s, before Furusato fell back once more.

With just over 11 minutes to go in the session, most of the drivers headed to the garage to prepare for the last, or last, time on track, and to attack or secure Q2 outright. Outside of this group of drivers were some of the benchmarks such as Jose Antonio Rueda, Joel Kelso, David Muñoz, Ivan Ortolá and Furusato.

Shortly afterwards most of the drivers were returning to the track, before Luca Lunetta crashed, and again at turn 4.

And shortly afterwards it was Filippo Farioli’s turn:

The session continued at a good pace towards the end, but the times didn’t improve significantly, with Riccardo Rossi joining the group of riders who crashed at turn 4.

The crashes followed each other, and now it was Stefano Nepa at turn 11, before his teammate Nicola Carraro brought the number of crashes to six at turn 4.

The session ended shortly afterwards, with all 14 drivers guaranteed Q2 directly in place, and Piqueras leading the way.
